Review:
Volume four of the unreleased basement tapes is not near the quality of the first couple of discs. Most likely the grounds for exclusion from any type of official release. The tracks here are an eclectic collection that run the gambit from somber to goofy. Throughout all, however, everyone seems to be lose and having a good time. A party atmosphere surrounds some of the tracks. Likely as not, "party favors" helped to influence the feel of some of the Basement recordings.

In 1968, Dylan painted this band / carnival scene that attempted to portray an atmosphere of the time. When The Band released some of their own recordings from the basement entitled 'Music From Big Pink', They used this painting as the front cover of the LP. Years later, when the Dylan / Band release 'The Basement Tapes' saw the official light of day, this painting inspired the atmosphere of the photo session that would produce the LP cover for that release.
