source: Chicago '94, Evanston, IN '91 Tracks: Disc one Chicago first set: Jokerman If Not For You All Along the Watchtower Simple Twist Of Fate Tangled Up In Blue Shelter From The Storm Mama, You've Been On My Mind bonus: Watching the River Flow I'll Be Your Baby Tonight Gotta Serve Somebody Answer Me (Winkler/Rauch) Disc two Chicago second set: Gates Of Eden * It's all Over Now, Baby Blue * God Knows Man In The Long Black Coat I'll Remember You Maggie's Farm What Good Am I It Ain't Me, Babe * bonus: Lonesome Old Sea * Folsom Prison Blues (Cash) Review: This is unlikely to be a favorite for many people, even if you're used to audience recordings. You feel as if you're right there in the audience... just an awfully long way from the stage. The vocals come through loud and clear, and are strong and often quite impassioned; but the arrangements are long, plodding, dreary and sometimes plain weird (such as a TUIB that sounds like a drunken Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band... right down to the pointless tempo shifts.) The sound improves slightly on the bonus tracks... but the performance doesn't. Nevertheless, there are highlights: all four acoustic tracks * stand out so far above the rest that it's almost comical. The bonus material from '91 is an odd filler, and even stranger is the way that it's added to each disc. The package aesthetics are fairly good. The venues are listed by city, but omit the state. McCaw Hall is misspelled on the back and the insert as well as "Folsom". © 2003 Craig Pinkerton Bobsboots.com |
