The recording has been long out of print on CD, and this release (despite using the same graphics as the official album) doesn't attempt to pass itself off as an official release. First of all, it's presented in a great looking glossy 3 panel foldout DigiPak with a silk screened CD. It all looks wonderful. Not only was the official CD package different from this, but it was never released in North America in the first place. Secondly, the manufacturer has made use of the CD's 80 minute playing time by including unreleased material recorded during a similar time frame... all in great quality. Lastly, the official recording was not taken from the 'A Fool Such As I' CD, it's a transfer from an excellent, clean and crackle free vinyl edition of Dylan (The title of the LP). As such, I find it retains a kind of warm analogue feel that is lacking on the official CD edition. This being the case, I feel that this is a great package for people who want to have this hidden gem in their collection, but are unable to find an official CD, or find the three figure sums often required in order to purchase a second hand copy of the out-of-print CBS CD a bit too much to ask. © 2002 M McGarr / CD Pinkerton bobsboots.com |
