[Bh] Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 Folsom Prison Blues (Jonnny Cash) * The Times * Review: In the liner notes, the Gentleman's Club of Spalding reports "The Quality of these new Tapes is Astounding". Astounding indeed. The soundboard recording is mastered to perfection by this wonderful label. Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht is a 1500 seat capacity venue, and a very intimate place to be. I remember fondly this wonderful night. Bob kicks off with a blinding rendition of Hank Snow's I'm Moving On (hence the CD title), and the scene is set as Bucky Baxter's electric slide guitar hints of the powerful performance to come. Dylan selected to play acoustic on all but three tracks and delivers quite beautiful performances of Tomorrow Night and Jim Jones (Of course, his tour here was in support of the World Gone Wrong CD). A very delicate performance of Mr. Tambourine Man follows these two standout tracks, with Bob finding it hard to grasp the melody. The nakedness and vulnerability of this acoustic set is kind of hard to listen to, but the jocular ending of Don't Think Twice lightens the mood. A lot of the songs drag out, and seem to look for an ending, but an incredibly uncompromising I And I kicks off disc 2 with a furious Winston (The Muppet) Watson flaying those skins with unparalleled urgency. The Times is played as if it were a march. The overall performance is a little ragged round the edges, but Rattlesnake has again produced the goods, and has gone over the top to do it. The set includes two beautiful silk-screened discs and a 12 page color booklet of rare photos. This is not a spectacular Dylan performance, but 9-10 stars for sound quality and aesthetics. A rare, unearthed gem!. © 2005 Keith Ravenscroft / bobsboots.com |
