Of course, the ultimate 'Royal Albert Hall' recording has been
released
by Sony Records. Few if any bootleg recordings can come up to
this
quality of excellence. For 30 years, however, the only way to
hear
this incredible concert was from a bootleg tape or album.
Being one of the most famous bootlegged concerts of all time, these
recordings have appeared on a countless number of albums with numerous
titles in varying quantities and qualities. The actual source(s)
of the tape was debated for many years. Many collectors
attributed
the tape to the Dublin show of May the 5th, or the Manchester show from
May 17th. Still, many others insisted that this was actually the
London recording from May 27th. Hence, it has always gone by the name
of
the London venue, The Royal Albert Hall. There was also a
recording
made of the May 26th London show.
Further confusion ensued when CBS prepared a live album for release and mixed songs from these venues into one tape. They may have had plans to list the sources when the album was released. However, when the project was scrapped, the tape circulated between collectors under the title Royal Albert Hall. It is now known, of course, that the meat of the recordings were in fact taken from the Manchester Free Trade Hall show of May 17th 1966. Some of the unreleased CBS acetate recordings were, in fact, from the May 26, 1966 London show.
